Curiosity dies, apathy arises

I wrote the following poem as a creative assignment for my Honors class. It's a response to Viktor E. Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning. I really enjoyed it so I thought i'd share with you.

Curiosity dies, apathy arises
Love, the salvation of man. Love
Unbeknownst of the beloved
Yet infinite glory surpasses
The everlasting bond goes on.
Distance cannot sever loves connection.
What breaks man’s outside
Gives no reason to break what’s inside.
Free in our bodies
Spirit and mind
The power to overcome lay within.
Values hold the key of all worth
For loss of the key, looses the self’s respect
The oneness a person holds
The freedom inside
The values upheld.
The will for values and life coincide
Thriving or perishing, as one.
To mean we need suffering, fate, death;
All is taken for granted without.
Suffering is a test, for meaning
To evolve meaning
To be great
The chance emerges and must be taken.
Expectation of the world
The root of despair.
We cannot ask of it
It asks of us.
To be full
We must fulfill
Each is one
A unique self
Differ in meaning, purpose, existence,
Our responsibility prevails
Love and life overpower
The meaning is clear
We exist
We choose paths
We grow, prosper
Fail, falter
We remain content
Or triumph all.

Banned Word List?

Happy Cyber Monday!
A friend of mine tweeted something very interesting that I need to, for lack of a better word, bitch about. Apparently, since 1976 Lake Superior State University has produced a ‘banished word list.’ Some of these words or phrases are just so out there, I think to myself, what drug were they on when they thought of this, so I know never to use it.
I’m not sure what is more ridiculous, them thinking any word should be banished, or their lack of intelligence in reasoning why.
The list, their response, my response:
Viral
Them- "I didn't mind much when 'viral' came to mean an under-handed tactic by advertising companies to make their ads look like pop culture. However, now anything that becomes popular on YouTube is suddenly 'viral.' I just don't get it." Kevin Wood, Wallacetown, Ont.
Me- Really? You don’t get it. Are you under a rock? It describes a video, or such, that everyone is talking about. It’s actually an intelligent [that means smart, Kevin] word that describes things that happen to content on the internet. You can’t control the content, America will like what it likes, and things will continue to go viral. Open your mind.
Epic
Them- "Anything that this word describes in popular over-usage is rarely ever 'epic' in the traditional sense of being heroic, majestic, or just plain awe-inspiring." Mel F., Dallas, Tex.
Me- Words change meanings. It’s a way for other words to come up and be better than before. ‘Gay’ used to mean happy, is it to say that the people you claim ‘gay’ as their sexual orientation aren’t using the word in the correct way? You’re ignorant, go away.
Fail
Them: "It has taken over blogs, photo captions, 'status' comments. Anytime someone does something less than perfect, we have to read 'FAIL!' The word has failed us all." Aaron Yunker, Ishpeming, Mich.

Me- Again people, deal with it. I mean come on, Aaron, you don’t have to read fail every time someone does something less than perfect [assuming you can read]. The clear answer your looking for here is not banishing the word, just start being more perfect.
*SKIP*
Wow Factor [Who even says that?]
A-HA Moment
Them- "All this means is a point at which you understand something or something becomes clearer. Why can't you just say that?" Audrey Mayo, Killeen, Tex.
Me- “I suddenly understand something and it makes sense!” That sounds dumb, like you Audrey. By telling someone you had an A-HA Moment, they can either A. Inquire more about what you’ve realized, or ignore it. It’s more like ‘would like you like to hear what I’ve just come to the realization of’ without sounding like a weird-o. [I’m well aware all humans in every form are indeed ‘weird-o’s,’ yet no one wants to be known as one.
*Skip*
BFF
Man Up
Refudiate
Mama Grizzlies
The American People
I’m Just sayin’
--> I’m sick of repeating myself: People. Come. On.
I do want to talk about these last two though:
Facebook/Google as verbs
Them- "Facebook is a great, addicting website. Google is a great search engine. However, their use as verbs causes some deep problems. As bad as they are, the trend can only get worse, i.e. 'I'm going to Twitter a few people, then Yahoo the movie listings and maybe Amazon a book or two." Jordan of Waterloo, Ont.
Me- It is quite accurate that we ‘Google’ something and ‘Facebook’ that quote. It sounds much more intelligent than “I’m going to look that up on The Google,” or “I’m going to post this quote on The Facebook.”
And finally, the one that struck me the hardest
Live life to the fullest
Them- "It's an absurdity followed by a redundancy. First, things are full or they're not; there is no fullest. Second, 'live life' is redundant. Finally, the expression is nauseatingly overused. What's wrong with enjoying life fully or completely? The phrase makes me gag. I'm surprised it hasn't appeared on the list before." Sylvia Hall, Williamsport, Penn.
Me- So, a saying that encourages to people to have fun in this F-ed up world we live in is now bad? There’s already enough negative in this world, Sylvia, you make me gag.
Quit with the liberal BULL. Word are words. Their connotations consistently change for the population, and the individual. If the society adopts the new connotation as acurate and good, then the denotation will change. DEAL WITH IT. Your entire list is pathetically absurd and is pointless, along with all the people who suggest words to it.

Hey everyone!

I don’t know about everyone else but it’s crazy around my house this holiday weekend. Between the great turkey and homemade stuffing, and Black Friday shopping starting at 9pm THANKSGIVING, I’m dead!
I hope all the crazy people waiting forever in line to get a cheap TV, or this years hot toys for their spoiled little brats got what they were looking for. I went out to see the festivities and spend a little on the best person in my life. ME. But really, I did some well deserved retail therapy (it’s cheaper than a psychiatrist).
Remember people, it’s the holidays, whether you’re Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Atheist, Agnostic or what have you, consider the holiday season one for family and friends. Be happy and appreciative of the people who are around you, that’s what it’s all about.
Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Black Friday, and Happy [insert holiday of choice]!

Turkey Day Eve!

It’s the eve of one of the best days dedicated to eating ever; Thanksgiving! I personally cannot wait to get together with the family, catch up on all the things I’ve missed since I went to college, and be around the people who matter most in life to me. (Only a wonderful 3 hour drive stands in my way [insert sarcasm here]). Not to mention those awesome cartoons that I loved watching each thanksgiving morning! Cartoon Network never fails me! (unless it’s a normal day where they play the new shitty cartoons that are drawn worse than the ones I grew up with...Scooby Doo, where are you?! We miss you!)
While we’re always taught how great of a relationship we had with the Native American’s, what we really should be thankful for is that they didn’t beat us. After all the terrible things the early settlers did, we should really be reflecting and apologizing, rather than thanking (Thanks for doing all the work and putting up with our ancestors, perhaps). The injustice will never go away, but we can be better people from now on.
Things I’m thankful for:
My family
My education
The ability to have multiple meals every day
Having a warm bed to sleep in
Loyal friends
My health
All my wonderful readers
Grandma’s Orange jello (it’s orange heaven)
Last, and probably the biggest thing I’m thankful for right now is the amazing first semester at college I’ve had. This place has done more for me than I could ever imagine. I’m so happy with the man I’m becoming, and can’t wait to see how I change even more though out my next years here.
And before I go, I must say I’m thankful for my awful roommates, as I hear him scream ‘you bastard’ to his video game. Without them I wouldn’t have experienced what it’s like to live with inconsiderate assholes. (I’m not sure if this has helped me yet, but I have faith that it will....eventually...I hope...)
What are your Thanksgiving plans? Do you celebrate? Leave a comment and start a conversation!

UPDATE: Fox News still sucks.

Check out these videos to further show the bias Fox 'news' station's hold.

It is completely crazy that they are even allowed to get away with things like this. Further reason that shows if you, or people you know rely on Fox, to STOP NOW.

Fox News makes you stupid

This makes my heart so happy. Read the article here --> http://huff.to/sDccJh
Basically, what we’ve always known has finally been confirmed in a study. If you watch Fox news, you’re more likely to not know jack about what’s going on in the world. People are finally beginning the see that Fox is EXTREMELY biased when it comes to reporting.
Go ahead, I dare you to type “Fox news bias” into google. Oh wait, I did it for you, here’s what it came up with.

These people really need to get their act together, and the people who still watch Fox need to realize they’re being made fun of, harshly.
Where do you rely on getting you’re news? Leave a comment!

Hungry and Homeless

When you realize how many people are hungry and homeless in the world, and that number registers in your head, all the words you can express are wow. There are 86,000 people in Michigan that are homeless. Put that number in perspective somehow, a way that makes sense to you. Ex: How many people are in your workplace, your graduating class, something that you can visualize to give you the significance of those 86,000 people. They all have faces, backgrounds, and basic needs that society is failing to provide for them.
Last week I participated in ‘Cardboard City’ at my college. We built box homes, lined up in front of our University Center and camped out. We spent the night in the cold on the ground in our boxes. This was a chilling realization for me. There are people who do this every single night. The entire experience was extremely eye-opening. I’m a little ashamed to admit it, but at 4am I had to get up and leave because I couldn't feel my toes anymore (plus I had a huge presentation that day and needed to get some good sleep).
It was hard for me to accept the fact that something I couldn't finish, thousands of people have to do every single night. It makes me want to think again before judging a homeless person on the street begging for money. Maybe they’re using it for drugs, but maybe they’re using it to feed their family. It’s quite depressing to think that we live in ‘the best country that ever existed’ (or what so many carelessly believe) and there are people who go to sleep each night hungry and cold.
Next time you pass someone who is homeless, stop and think: They have a story. These are just regular people, who’ve come upon hard times. That isn’t hard with all the economic hardships we deal with today.
During the holiday season think about these people. We all know cash is tight, but think about getting one less present these year, and donating that money so someone can have a meal this holiday season. You have the ability to affect someones life, and that is powerful.
What are your thoughts on this? Have you ever had experiences with the homeless? Share your story in the comments!

People make me sick.

I wake up this morning, check my Twitter to see any news I missed out on throughout the night to keep up to date and was disturbed at what I saw. An 80 year old women was murdered in Royal Oak, MI (Close to my hometown). For those of you who don’t know, Royal Oak is known for being an up scale area, with an attractive downtown.
WDIV-Detroit (Local 4) described that the women was bound and her throat was slit. (http://bit.ly/tGoVlk)Growing up close to Detroit, I’ve been used to hearing about someone being killed, but never in a neighborhood like this. To think that someone, my grandmothers age, had to go through that torture, it makes me angry. No one should ever have to go through something as hell-ish as that. Even if that person is a bad seed and cruel to others.
It’s events like this that blind society to all the good that is going on. There are good people out there, but just like most things, people notice the things that go wrong, never what goes right. The news should do more praise stories, showing off the talent and good going on in their community. People are depressed as it is, we need an way to be uplifted!
What are your thoughts about murder or the stories news sources cover. Be sure to comment!

My unhealthy obsession with Rihanna.

Ever since ‘Please Don’t Stop the Music’ I’ve found myself in love with Rihanna. Her voice and talent is unique to her, and it proves to be a sound only she has. I’m so pumped to hear all her new stuff on ‘Talk that Talk’ which will have a different sound to it. The electronica she is now incorporating into her music truly shows her ability to adapt and change her style as the market changes.
Time magazine discussed Rihanna and her lyrics stating:
“Rihanna equates love to feelings of drunkenness and uncontrollable addiction — the stuff of tragedy. She’s more akin to Lady Gaga in that sense. But there’s one big difference: Gaga seeks out emotional destruction while Rihanna seems to stumble into it.” -http://ti.me/tmnGjh
This hits the nail on the head. ‘We Found Love’ is such a great song. When I saw the video, I was in awe. I went around showing all my friends and told them I liked the song when I heard it, but I LOVE the video. (See video at the bottom and prepare to be inspired)
Time’s description is perfect. The way she speaks about life and love is that of real experiences that people have, which make her very relatable to her audience. She is a real women, with a real life. We know she isn’t perfect simply because she dated Chris Brown, a lyrical idiot (no I don’t want to ‘run it, run it’ or say ‘yeah’ 500 times during a song, use a thesaurus).
I’m really excited for all her new stuff, and will post about her in the future as I discover what she’s putting out on the new album. Rihanna, don’t disappoint me!

Lets talk about the Kardashians...

Googling ‘pathetic excuses for humans’ should result in the Kardarshians as the top hit. I have never watched an episode of the show, and never plan on it. But I know the basic plot to it (if you can call it a plot). I refuse to support the family’s greed, and their obnoxious materialism that they display.
The idea of Kim’s marriage is a complete mockery of the union of marriage. Seventeen million dollars wasted on a frivolous wedding that lasted a whopping 72 days. All I could think about when the news broke was how all of that money could have been spent on so many other things that could have helped so many people in this world. Good people who truly need help. Or even the government that comes close to shutting down every three months. Lets think about this people...
Thankfully, as I seen on Time magazine (http://ti.me/vPwkcb), that there is a petition to get the show cancelled! It’s about damn time. I went to the website to explore the effort a little further. It’s clear that someone either spent good money, or a lot of time making this website. It’s quite clever actually and I encourage you all to at least look at the website, whether you agree or not. (http://bit.ly/ru55b3
The website really is awesome. It’s doing something really good to. There needs to be a stand up against this sort of materialism. We have to work together if the average people like us want to survive. People who argue to 'leave them alone' and all that are clearly blinded. We have to make a stand against this, we can't simply ignore it! Their flaunted in front of us everyday. It's difficult to go a day without at the least hearing about one of them!
How do you feel about the Kardashians? Leave a comment, share your opinion!

Two weeks in line for Black Friday?!

I was reading through my Tweets and noticed one out of the ordinary posted by Time “People are already waiting in line for Black Friday sales (hint: they start in 6 days) | http://ti.me/sInqgU”

Wait, wait.
EXCUSE ME?
There’s a limit to this ridiculous idea of American materialism that I can handle, and this by far surpasses it. I don’t know whether to be more mad about the people crazy enough to wait up to 12 DAYS before Black Friday for deals, or the corporations pushing this ‘holiday.’ Sure I see the benefits for the economy on this day, and that it helps the economy blah blah blah....
Has anyone thought that all these deals can happen because of how high the prices are already jacked up? Maybe if they brought the prices down slightly throughout the entire year, people would have more money to spend on, oh I don’t know, more things from their stores! Or even pay of the debts that they have...
And just for arguments sake, I have a question for you, Time magazine. Is it really necessary to point out that one of the people camping out is “a 20-year-old with a nose ring.” What exactly are you implying here Time?
What are your thoughts on this bizarre Black Friday situation?

Don't be a lame college student...

College: an educational institution. This is a pretty dull way of defining the time in someone life where they find out more about themselves than they ever could have imagined.
So to this I pose the question: Why sit in your room all day and play video games/do nothing?
I’ve come across this in multiple situations. The hall I live in is quite quiet, and I see these type of students a lot, including my own roommates. I will walk to the stairwell to leave and the end two doors across from eachother will always be open. The left room will always have at least one boy playing Call of Duty or watching South Park. The right room will have at least one girl watching TV, usually with a blanket on (I even cause one of the girls laying with her back in the doorway and her feet up on the door!).
To these people I’ve always wondered, what the hell are you doing with your life? You really don’t have anything better to do than that? Go outside! Smell the fresh air! We’re paying a disgusting amount of money, money that we don’t even have, to go to this institution. There is an immense amount of ways to get involved, and there are so many diverse groups that there is absolutely something for everybody... Unless you came to college to smoke weed every day and get drunk on a Monday, of course.
And while there’s nothing wrong with drinking on a Sunday..... Wait until you’re living in a trailer park for that.
I just feel like there is so much more these kids could be doing with their lives, why aren’t they doing it! What is your take on this issue? Do you think you could do more with your life? Leave a comment or Tweet this post!

Lets get started...

This may start off a little dull, but keep reading. I have faith that as soon as I get the hang of all of this, my blogs will become something you’ll want to read everyday!
I feel like the best way to start off is to talk about my roommates, mainly because I’m sitting in my living room writing this and cannot stop listing to their pointless conversations. I think something everyone needs to experience is living with people you absolutely cannot stand. College is definitely giving me this opportunity. You always hear the things throughout middle/high school about getting that one crappy roommate, well I got two.
These ‘children’ that I call my roommates have the mentality of thirteen year old boys. (They're actually sophomores in college). I’m not sure how any of my readers feel about this, but I have a low tolerance for ignorant people. Screaming offensive terms and yelling at a video game (which, last time I checked, doesn’t care if you ‘just died’) is NOT what the cool kids do. I’m pretty sure the cool kids are people like me and you, who read to read, and become the people who do something in the messed up world that we live in.
Roommates will test your morals, and push you to your limits. For example, there have been two trash bags with two pizza boxes sitting in the corner of my dorm for about 7 weeks now (yes, there is food and other things that are probably molding inside of them). But I REFUSE to be their mother and take it out. I can’t remember the last time the bathroom was cleaned, thank goodness for double sinks. It's an extremely unsanitary environment, but this will be an experience I can use to remember that not everyone will live their lives like me, and somehow they can be okay with it. Also, when I said everyone should do it I meant it, but not for a long period of time! I cannot wait to switch rooms and get away from them next semester!
Anyways, I’m trying to find the students in college who are going to be the greats in America when we become *gasp* adults. Thats a scary thought that will get a post eventually.
Like I mentioned, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, so I won’t be complaining for much longer. I should be moving in with my friend Kevin. I went to school with Kevin. He is very liberal, and very gay. So I’m sure some interesting posts will result from that time, something to look forward to!
I have lots of ideas that are floating around in this head. I can’t wait to transcribe them for this blog and get feedback, and strike thoughtful conversations and debates.
If anyone has any questions about me or just feels the need to comment (maybe you’ve had the same crappy roommates as me!) Please leave a comment and I’ll be sure to respond!

Where to start...

I’m not quite sure how to start this, but I feel like we should get to know each other better. Hi, I’m Andrew Wilson. I’m currently studying at Central Michigan University and just another person looking for their place in the world and the meaning of life. Through this blog I truly hope to connect and inspire others through my experiences. I will cover *Aha’s!* and such, anything that is itching at my mind, and maybe even dabble into the current events. I’m really exciting to start building a fan base, and really hope I can do some good in this crazy world we’re all surviving in.
AeW
Afterthefact:
I finish my first post, and am pleased with the outcome. In satisfaction I went to drink my Gatorade and, well, red liquid found the hold in my mouth and went all over my white thermal! Just such luck, but no sense in getting upset. No crying over spilled milk, right?
Have a great weekend everyone!

A day in the life...

Welcome to my blog! I'm really looking forward to getting all my thoughts out there to anyone willing to listen. I'm here to discuss pretty much everything that pops into my 18 year old college student head of mine. At this time in my life I am seeing the world in a different light than i ever have before.
I can't wait to, hopefully, pose great discussions to help us figure out this crazy world.
